Latinx Heritage Month
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Families:
sfunified

Dear SFUSD Families,

We're a few weeks into the new school year, and I have enjoyed visiting many schools and seeing our amazing students learn. I have seen how we have so many unique programs to support our students. As a bilingual Spanish educator, I have appreciated visiting our bilingual programs and hearing our students learn in two languages. It's been wonderful to meet the diverse SFUSD community-- thank you for contributing to our public schools where our students can grow and thrive.

I've been making these school visits as part of my 117-day entry plan. The purpose of the plan is for me to listen and learn in order to help me understand the strengths and needs of the district. As part of the plan, I have scheduled a series of multilingual town halls with the community that will be held in the coming weeks. I hope to see you there.

I also want to wish everyone a happy mid-Autumn festival and Rosh Hashanah this month. Additionally, we share information about LatinX Heritage month for students and families. Please continue reading for resources and bright spots at SFUSD schools.

Updated Air Quality Guidance

SFUSD has updated its air quality guidance for the 2022-23 school year.

During wildfires or other times when air quality is poor, state guidance recommends prioritizing maintaining healthy air quality indoors. Schools can stay open even if they need to close their windows or decrease outdoor air intake by the ventilation system during these times.

SFDPH/SFUSD MPX Guidance

SF Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has provided guidance on MPX (formerly called monkeypox) for schools, childcare, and youth programs. SFUSD is already implementing health and safety measures to prevent the spread of MPX in our schools.

At this point in time, SFDPH believes that the risk of MPX in schools, childcare, and youth programs is low.

Mid-Autumn Festival

The mid-Autumn Festival is a harvest festival celebrated by Chinese, Vietnamese, and other Asian communities. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with a full moon at night. In 2022, the mid-Autumn Festival will take place on Sept. 10. The focus of the celebration is giving thanks for the bounty of nature and for happy reunions with loved ones.

Wishing everyone a happy mid-Autumn Festival!

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. This year, the holiday begins on Sept. 25 and ends on Sept. 27. Rosh Hashanah is a time for joy and reflection. During the holiday, Jewish people traditionally reflect on their actions from the previous year, think about how to better themselves and their community, and reset or reaffirm their spiritual commitments.

We wish everyone a good year filled with hope, health, and happiness!
