Dear SFUSD Families,
As a school district that values diversity, we believe Black History should be celebrated 365 days a year — 366 in a leap year. The diverse histories, experiences, stories and voices of Black people should be recognized, honored, and uplifted every day.
We also value the fundamental opportunity Black History Month offers schools to acknowledge African Americans as critical to the past, present and future, and we recognize the importance, relevance and origins of Black History Month.
Throughout the month of February, San Francisco public schools host a multitude of lessons, events, performances and more to celebrate Black excellence. I am most excited to participate in the upcoming 28th African American Honor Roll Celebration, which is also the 19th Annual Community Awards Ceremony to celebrate our African American scholars, their families, and the community. As an educator, I cherish these opportunities to recognize the brilliance of our Black students and our collective effort to ensure that they are realizing their boundless potential.

High school seniors in SF can apply for Mayor London Breed's Bridge to Excellence scholarship with awards up to $5,000. Last year, the Bridge to Excellence program gave 16 students scholarships.

More Than a Month: Black History Month
More Than a Month, San Francisco Public Library’s celebration of Black history and futures, is focused on the theme of resistance this year. Dance and music performances, storytelling and film showings, among other programs, are all free and happening at SFPL locations across the city. |

De Youngsters Day Out
This free, in-person, all-day event on Mar. 11 includes hands-on art making activities led by teaching artists, and conversations about the de Young Museum's collection artworks with community partners and local contemporary artists. |

Superintendent’s 21st Century Award
The Superintendent’s 21st Century Award will be granted to six graduating SFUSD seniors who exemplify a particular strength in one or more of the characteristics of the SFUSD Graduate Profile. All SFUSD seniors are eligible for this award regardless of citizenship status. Winners will each receive a $2,000 scholarship.

High School Task Force Listening Sessions
The SFUSD High School Task Force invites students, families, staff, and community members to Community Listening Sessions in February. The agenda for each session includes an SFUSD High School Task Force progress update and opportunities for community input on what it wants in SFUSD high schools. |

For 50 years, Shirley Canyon has been a school bus driver for students with special needs in San Francisco. She was recently awarded with a special honor by Zūm Services for her years of service and dedication.
