SFUSD Career Technical Education Students Showcase Projects to Community

San Francisco (April 6, 2023) - Hundreds of San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) students in high school Career Technical Education programs will demonstrate their year-end capstone projects in a large community showcase. The showcase will take place today, Thursday, April 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Student performances and technical demonstrations throughout the event include students from Arts, Media, and Entertainment pathways - Audio Production, World Dance, Music Technology; Biotechnology & Health Sciences; Building Construction & Trades; Automotive Sciences; and Culinary Arts. Example projects include original coding in Python, improving food systems in San Francisco, and reducing the effects of climate change.

“It's exciting to see our students showcase their hard work before such a large audience,” said SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne. “SFUSD's Career Technical Education programs give students a head start in preparing for life after high school, which is directly tied to one of the district's long-term goals of increasing the percentage of 12th graders who are college- and career-ready.”

Career Technical Education programs, also known as SFUSD CTE Pathways, are available at 14 high schools. From Biotech to Culinary Arts, all 46 CTE Pathway programs cultivate critical thinking, technical literacy, public speaking, and leadership skills. Through CTE Pathways, students have college and career exposure so that they are able to make informed decisions about their path after high school, and they have the work skills to thrive in the workforce. Additional programs include Building and Construction Trades; Media Arts; Health Sciences; Engineering; Automotive; Business; and Public Services.

Career Technical Education programs are part of SFUSD’s College and Career Readiness Department. The College and Career Readiness Department has several teams that implement SFUSD’s Graduate Profile by offering innovative programs and helping schools rethink the traditional school day. These teams include: Career Technical Education (CTE), Early College, Work-based Learning/Internships, College Ambassadors, AVID and High School Credit Recovery. CCR builds an on-ramp to postsecondary success so students graduate high school; successfully participate in Early College, Career & Technical Education, Work-Based Learning (WBL) and/or College Preparatory courses; matriculate and persist in college, while advancing in a career field; and earn a college degree.
