SFUSD Insider - April/May 2023
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Colleagues:

Ni hao! Kamusta! Xin chào! Talofa! These are ways to say hello in Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese and Samoan — some of the primary languages spoken by Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students and families in the San Francisco Unified School District.

This month in May, we recognize AAPI Heritage Month to honor and uplift the many important contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who are essential to San Francisco’s history, present and future. In SFUSD, we honor our AAPI communities each day. SFUSD also has employee affinity groups such as the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Racial Affinity Administrators Group and Kabayan for Filipino/Filipino-American staff. For resources to inspire your students, check out SFUSD’s AAPI Heritage Month Resource Guide.

Please keep reading this month’s newsletter for other important updates and information.

Dr. E'leva Hughes Gibson
Dr. E’leva Hughes Gibson Honored for Leadership by CAAASA and ACSA

Dr. E’leva Hughes Gibson, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools (Cohort 5), received the Outstanding Leadership in Education Award at the California Association of African American Superintendents (CAASA) Annual Statewide Summit in March. Co-presented by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), the award recognizes California educational leaders for their outstanding work and commitment to educational excellence for African American, Latinx, and other students of color.

E’leva says, “It is an honor to be able to serve children and families in our public school system and to be recognized for making a difference. I am grateful for my colleagues and educational partners who, through our collective efforts, work hard to improve outcomes for ‘each and every’ child. We are in this equity-centered work together!”

Erminia Benitez
Erminia Benitez, Assistant Cook at McAteer Culinary Center, Wins RAVE

Erminia Benitez of Student Nutrition Services was nominated for her student-centered approach to her work.

According to her nomination, Ms. Benitez "connects so well with students and tells them regularly how proud of them she is. She also saves plates of food for students who have long commutes to school and can't always make it on time for breakfast service. She knows that for some students, these are the only meals they have to get through the day."

Read about colleagues who have been nominated and those who have won a RAVE award. You can nominate any district employee or team for recognition (except for yourself or an entire school).
