SFUSD Offers Breakfast and Lunch at No Cost to Youth This Summer

District Prepares to Serve 200,000 Free Meals at Over 80 Schools in June and July

San Francisco (June 6, 2023) - The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) will once again offer free breakfast and lunch to all youth ages 18 and under in San Francisco this summer, which is an extension of its offering of free school meals for SFUSD students during the school year.

The meals will be available at over 80 schools with summer programming in June and July. Of the 80-plus school sites serving summer meals, over 40 sites will be open to youth in the community regardless of enrollment in summer programs. All meals must be eaten at the school site.

“For 180 days during the school year SFUSD provides our students nutritious meals. We’re thrilled to be able to continue this during the summer months, which is a practice we’ve had in place since before the COVID-19 pandemic,” said SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne. “We are committed to supporting the whole child, and know that access to a healthy meal is one way we can set up our children for success.”

Since the 2021-22 school year, SFUSD has offered all students no-cost meals during the school year as part of Federal pandemic-era waivers. As of the 2022-23 school year, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into order California Meals for All, which established the California Universal Meals Program that provides no-cost breakfast and lunch for all school children during the regular school year.

As the largest meal provider in San Francisco, SFUSD Student Nutrition Services (SNS) is committed to providing students the equitable support they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond, by keeping them nourished along the way. During the regular school year, SNS serves over 47,500 meals per day at over 120 schools across San Francisco. This summer, SNS prepares to serve an estimated 200,000 meals.
